I re-downloaded Instagram today after going on a social media cleanse for a couple weeks. I was clicking through people’s instagram stories (I thought it’d be a good way to think of things for me to do) when I saw a gathering of a group of kids from my hometown on someone’s story. Like, a GATHERING gathering. There was somewhere between 12 to 15 of them, and they were definitely not 6 feet apart.

My first thought was, who let them be so stupid? But these were kids who were 18 to 19 years old, so really I wondered, how could they let themselves be so stupid and careless?

As many of us approach 70 days in quarantine, it’s easy to get super bored and discouraged. My friends and I have all been quarantined with our families for the past several weeks, and no one in our families (including us) have shown symptoms. And while it can be tempting to finally hang out not 6 feet apart, we need to be careful since we are still exposing ourselves when we run essential errands. So someone in our network of families today — God forbid — could have gotten it. And if — God forbid — that was the case, we are quarantined for that exact reason.

Is it overkill? Who cares! The cost to stay inside (if you have the luxury) may be a burden, but the possible damage of not staying inside is catastrophic.

Funerals are empty, jobs are being lost, and weddings are postponed. Some are quarantined with abusive spouses and/or families, and others are all alone, unable to be near family. (Side note, if you are living in an abusive environment, please know that the National Domestic Violence Hotline is reachable 24/7/365 at @ndvh by chat or by calling their hotline at 1–800–799–7233.)

In the end, we NEED to quarantine to safeguard our health and the health of others. The more cautious we are now, the sooner we can restart our lives.
